Practicum & training
Become the kind of clinician older adults wish they'd had earlier.
We offer doctoral practicum positions (PsyD and PhD) in geriatric psychology — supervision-rich training in evidence-based outpatient therapy for older adults. Limited cohort, careful match, real cases, real growth.
What you'll learn
Geriatric psychology, learned in the room.
Evidence-based methods adapted for older adults
CBT for older adults, behavioral activation, problem-solving therapy, prolonged grief therapy, reminiscence/life review. Not theoretical — case by case, week by week.
Real diagnostic complexity
Late-life depression vs. grief vs. early cognitive change. Anxiety vs. medical anxiety. The clinical thinking that distinguishes them — under supervision until you're ready, then with a longer leash.
Family-system work
Adult children, partners, caregivers — when to include them, when not, and how to navigate the dynamics gracefully.
End-of-life clinical work
How to sit with terminal illness conversations, what reminiscence and meaning-making look like in practice, how to support clients facing real loss.
Integrated medical care
Coordinating with primary care, geriatricians, neurology. How to work alongside (not under) the medical system on behalf of your client.
Cultural humility, in eight languages
You'll see clients from across LA's communities. Even if you don't speak all the languages, you'll learn what culturally responsive care looks like beyond a workshop.
What we offer trainees
Supervision is the curriculum.
Our supervision model is two weekly hours of individual supervision with a licensed psychologist, plus a weekly group case-conference. We review session recordings, discuss cases in depth, and mentor your case formulation skills. We do not treat trainees as cheap labor; we treat them as colleagues earlier in their careers.
Trainees see a graduated caseload — usually 6–10 hours of direct service per week by the end of the second quarter — across our full diagnostic mix. You'll see depression, anxiety, grief, transitions, chronic illness, end-of-life, couples, and family work. You'll be supervised on every case, every week.
Compensation: training stipend (varies by year and program). Benefits include access to our full library, free clinical assessments, and a pathway to licensure-track post-doctoral fellowship for strong fits.
